SPRING SURPRISES

ANTICIPATION

Laid to rest ...
Naked bulbs buried in the dark, dank earth,
Waiting to be covered with a blanket of white crystals.
Laid to rest ...
But not without hope.
Anticipating resurrection in the spectrum of spring’s glory.

And so it was, on a chilly November day in 2014 that I planted a surprise brown bag of mixed tulip bulbs, nestled in what I call the 'Circle of Friends', ten carefully chosen stones that have been engraved with our grand children's names on the occasion of their birth.
Cousins and friends, and yet each one unique in their physical appearance, personality and gifting. Each one a lovely surprise when they were anticipated, and even more so when they arrived and were named, belonging to the family.

Spring has revealed the surprise in the garden bed, not only in the variety of tulips but also that 25 bulbs proliferated as two varieties sported multiple blooms on one stem. Each flower individually splendid and diversified, yet all belonging to the family of tulips.

If you've never been thrilled to the very edges of your soul by a flower in spring bloom, maybe your soul has never been in bloom.

  1. So pretty! I love the comparison between the surprise variety of tulips and the happy variety in the little cousins. (That would make you and Dad the ‘surprise brown bag’ of the family, you know.) :)
