POSTCARDS from ROME

It was stormy sailing into the port of Civitevechia this morning and the rain kept up as we bussed into Rome giving the city a dreary welcome for us.
Rome - as John Hewood said, "was not built in one day" and neither did we see it all in one day. The crowds were thick which made tours of the Vatican, St Peter's Basilica and the Sistine Chapel uncomfortable as we shouldered through these magnificent buildings with lavish fresco's, golden artifacts and beautiful sculptures. There was just too much to appreciate as we were herded through, our eyes looking up and down, back and forth, overwhelmed with all the details. No photos in the Sistine Chapel, and even without those images I have more photos than you will care to view.

The Tiber River

Il Vittoriana or Altar of the Nation

The Colosseum and yes, we were really there.

The Vatican

The Vatican museum was filled from ceiling to floor with paintings, tapestries, mosaics and statues, the works of many Renaissance artists.

St Peter's Basilica

St. Peter's Benini Badachino
a 98 foot bronze canopied altar

Apse Gloria behind the altar

Michelangelo's dome above the altar

Magnificent domes throughout the cathedral

Michelangelo's Pieta St. Peter's
