August 2026

With summer vacation time upon us, we were looking for possibilities to give us the next best thing to camping.
Cabins on lakes were already booked  when we came upon this VRBO 'Cottage On The River' in Rock Creek BC.
It was located on the Kettle River just a few Km from the provincial park that we had camped at over many years. Well, it turned out to be a perfect fit for us as we both grew up on farms and this seemed like a place to let nostalgia reawaken old memories.
Set far back from the highway with a backdrop of dry hills spattered with pine trees, the farm emerged in amongst green fields with huge irrigation machines pulsing out swishing arcs of water.

The farm house was built in the 1940's, and though the outside was original, the inside was renovated into a very comfortable home. The owners lived on the property and shared the history of this being his childhood home.

The Kettle River ran close behind the house, a calming presence from the deck. The river's course took a bend forming a natural swimming hole which was a lovely spot to dip in on a hot day. A very serene ambiance perfect for a morning coffee, a good book , crossword puzzles or a sketching pad.

The huge Maple tree created wonderful shade for our meals.
A variety of chickens and a rooster (who was our alarm clock) pecked away right near us and a young deer ambled across the lawn stopping under the apple tree for a few crunchy bites.

Our daughter Shelley and family came to visit for a day and enjoyed a BBQ supper and a swim in the river with us.

The countryside did us good!

We took a road trip to Greenwood where our destination was the Copper Eagle Bakery Cafe for their acclaimed, most delicious cinnamon rolls. A must stop when travelling east on Hwy 3.

We left the  'Cottage On The River' feeling refreshed, with good memories, and hopefully another visit some day.
