ADVENT - WEEK 1

It's the most wonderful time of the year - the season of Christmas Advent.

On the eve of the Advent season we attended a magnificent rendition of Handel's Messiah. What a rich oratorio composition of Biblical truth set to an awesome musical score way back in 1741. I have sung it several times and heard it many more and each time I get goose bumps as the music rises and falls with glorious energy and deep passion. I recently read how Handel used a musical technique called 'word painting' in which the melody mimics the lyrics.

Today, on this first Sunday of Advent I found my cozy spot to begin my four weeks of special meditations with my Bible, journal and favourite Advent readings.

I purchased a new book to follow in these weeks and I was so excited to begin my discoveries.
Words from Isaiah 2:5 jumped out at me today.

" Come descendants of Jacob, let us walk in the light of the Lord!"

In Revelation 22 Jesus says he is the "Bright Morning Star," and so I focused in on some of my lighted stars to remind me this week of the light of God that has come to live in and among us.

Late afternoon drew my attention outside to the sunset which always reminds me of God's glory and the promise of His return to reign on a new Earth. We sang the following song this morning in church and I just had to share the awesome lyrics.

HOW MANY KINGS
by Downhere

Follow the star to a place unexpected
Would you believe, after all we've projected
A child in a manger?
Lowly and small, the weakest of all
Unlikeliest hero, wrapped in his mother's shawl -
Just a child
Is this who we've waited for? 'cause...

How many kings step down from their thrones?
How many lords have abandoned their homes?
How many greats have become the least for me?
And how many gods have poured out their hearts
To romance a world that is torn all apart
How many fathers gave up their sons for me?

Bringing our gifts for the newborn Savior
All that we have, whether costly or meek
Because we believe
Gold for his honor, and frankincense for his pleasure
And myrrh for the cross he will suffer
Now, do you believe?
Is this who we've waited for?

How many kings step down from their thrones?
How many lords have abandoned their homes?
How many greats have become the least for me?
And how many gods have poured out their hearts
To romance a world that is torn all apart
How many fathers gave up their sons for me?
Only one did that for me.

All for me, all for you
All for me, all for you
