It's the time of year when the days are getting shorter, the nights frosty, and a mid-day walk chilly enough for hands to beg for mittens. It's also the time to meld the rich colours and flavours from the garden's harvest to create the mouthwatering comfort foods which are synonymous to autumn and winter days; soups, stews and crock pot meals. There's nothing more comforting than coming in from a brisk, crisp walk to the tantalizing aroma of savoury spices simmering on the stove.
Butternut squash and apples are a tasty pair ...
combined with onions, garlic and spices ...
simmered together with chicken or vegetable broth ...
(recipe from Everybody Loves Sandwiches)
while Italian Wedge Bread is baking ...
(recipe from Mennonite Girl can Cook)
served with a dollop of yogurt or sour cream.
For dessert - Pumpkin/Apple Crumb Cake
(recipe from Everybody Loves Sandwiches)
On another night - leftover Italian Wedge Bread is a perfect accompaniment to Mixed Bean Bake, (recipe from Mennonite Girls Can Cook) served with a side of coleslaw.
I like doubling soup recipes which makes enough for several freezer meals. The bean pot made enough to share with friends on another chilly evening. Happy Autumn Cooking!

Mmmm ... now I'm hungry at completely the wrong time of day. Looks inspiring!
I had butternut squash soup at Earls recently and wanted to go home and look it up. You just reminded me of it. Your recipe combinations look so good!
