SALZBURG AUSTRIA
A two hour bus ride towards an alpine setting to the city of Salzburg, Austria at the foothills of the Alps.
The hills are alive with the sound of moo-sic
Salzburg translated is salt fortress, a name derived from the barges that carried salt on the River Salzach.
The town was built on the site of a Roman settlement and founded in 696 as an Episcopal jurisdiction over which a Bishop presided. The historic centre was enlisted as a UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE in 1996
The fortress of Hohensalzburg, one of the largest medieval fortresses in Europe, dates back to the 11th century. Directly below the fortress lies the Mirabell Palace and gardens. The amazing garden with its swirling flower beds is highlighted with colourful florals that change through the seasons
A gardener working on the flowerbed stands in front of the Pegagus Fountain and staircase where the Do Re Mi tune from the famous Sound of Music movie was sung by Maria and the children as they danced around the fountain, and up and down the Angel staircase.
In the centre of Mirabell garden is the grand Parterre fountain surround at four corners by mythology-themed statues sculpted in 1690 by Italian artist Ottavio Mosto
I so wished we had time to take in The Marionette Theater's production of the Sound of Music, which is included in the UNESCO List of Intangible Cultural Heritage. Unfortunately the 2 hour show would have meant missing boarding time on our Star Ship

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born in this house, #9 Getriedegasse in Salzburg Austria.
I was surprised to see that I share my birthday, January 27th with this great musician.
Sightseeing from a massive fortress, a huge garden and then down to a shop window with hundreds of realistic miniature clay sculptures.
Salzburg Cathedral in 17th century baroque style was founded in 774 on the remnants of a Roman town.
The statue of the Virgin Mary with angels holding a golden crown above her head is made of marble and lead and built during the 18th century.

The German Hymnal was open to this page at the back of the cathedral, so we took time to read and understand its meaning. Translation; Thanks to God for he is good and great in all he does. His graciousness endures for all time, preserved through eternity. |
