POSTCARDS from MYKONOS, GREECE

A gorgeous sky greeted us this morning after a full day of rough seas. After rounding the boot of Italy, passing close to the lights of Sicily twinkling in the night, we felt the buffeting winds on deck as we scooted past a deserted pool area to find shelter in cozy nooks on the ship to read and play a game of Scrabble.
And here we are in Mykonos Greece, an enchanting island rising up against the azure Aegean Sea. We walked through Mykonos town also known as Chora, through a maze of narrow alleys, whitewashed walls, flat roofed houses and churches, wooden doors and shutters painted in the shades of the blue sea. I was glad we had worn blue clothes to blend in with the surroundings. :) Enjoyed a Greek yogurt and strong cappuccino in a seaside internet cafe where we could finally send an email home to family.
The windmills on Mykonos are iconic reminders of a Venetian influence from the 16th century. Mykonos is nicknamed 'the island of the winds' which would have powered these windmills to grind the local wheat. Somehow this rocky island hardly seemed like a fertile environment to grow crops.
What a simply delightful day on this charming island.
